AMP 2012: COASTS COLLIDE with LEVYdance & SIDRA BELL DANCE NEW YORK
AMP, the project: A new residency program that culminates in a collaborative performance program in San Francisco, then tours nationally and internationally. Through AMP, LEVYdance seeks to build an innovative alternative to the 'single choreographer dance company' model that maintains the individual identity of the artists involved, but shares resources to include a more comprehensive approach to creation. For its pilot year, LEVYdance invited Sidra Bell Dance New York.
Benjamin Levy was compelled by Sidra Bell's prodigious gift for movement invention and the sense that, while aesthetically quite different from his own, it is derived from a similar practice of privacy, creative intimacy, and personal excavation with the dancer in rehearsal. The time, space, and resources available through the AMP program will allow Bell an extended period of investigation and research. During the residency, Bell, in creative partnership with LEVYdance, will choreograph a new work for the company.
Simultaneously, Bell will create a new work for her own company. The two pieces are "twinworks" created side by side and existing in the same stage environment. Though twins, each piece has its own distinct personality generated by the aesthetics and cultures of the companies creating and performing them. The program will include the LEVYdance repertory piece Physics (2008) performed by LEVYdance, a new work by Bell, titled less, performed by LEVYdance, and a new work by Bell, titled Nudity, performed by Sidra Bell Dance New York. LEVYdance and Sidra Bell Dance New York will engage in a joint national and international tour in the winter of 2013.

Mellon Foundation.

About SBDNY: Sidra Bell Dance New York, is a boutique company based in New York City that presents innovative, kinetic, and provocative dance theater works. It has continually presented progressive, high fashion, cinematic, glamorous, and elaborate full scale productions to sold-out New York City audiences. Bell is an sought after voice in contemporary dance with a strong female vision creating works that ignite the imagination and explore the complexities of the human condition. Bell excavates the psyche and themes that are life affirming. The company's repertoire is unusual, haunting, emotionally transporting, complex, articulate, sensual, and highly physical. It has become known for atmospheric, unconventional, spectacular, and forward-looking works that push past dance?s traditional vocabulary, venues, and boundaries. The vocabulary is elegant, fantastical, tonal, and darkly romantic with original themes and larger than life characters. The choreographer enjoys material that is highly textural and graphic. She plays with and mines the natural and unnatural worlds as well as synthetic and organic tones.

"Ms. Bell has a lot working in her favor: powerful, daredevil dancers and an almost garish imagination capable of dreaming up surreal scenarios... a slick intensity dominates her onstage worlds." - New York Times
Sidra Bell, Artistic Director of Sidra Bell Dance New York, is currently a Master Lecturer at the University of the Arts (Philadelphia), was Adjunct Professor at Barnard College (Columbia University), has a degree in history from Yale University and an MFA in Choreography from Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. Her critically acclaimed company and work has been seen throughout the United States and internationally in Denmark, France, Austria, Germany, China, Canada, Aruba, Korea, Brazil and Greece. The Company was lauded in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's 2010 Best in Dance for ReVUE. Bell has received many commissions for new work from internationally renowned companies and institutions around the world. Recently, she was commissioned for a feature film TEST directed by Chris Mason Johnson and shot on location in San Francisco (release date-2013). She is a sought after master teacher and was featured in Dance Teacher Magazine (2012).
